Why Are You So Sad?
Genesis 40
Gen 40:6-7 When
Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he
asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why
are your faces so sad today?”
JOSEPH’S question to the baker and the
cupbearer whom Pharaoh had imprisoned with him is a wondrous one—simple, yet of
lasting implications.
First,
we see Joseph’s caring spirit. Joseph was a prisoner. He was in charge of
others. But he was still a prisoner with a very restricted life. Joseph could
have easily ruled with an angry, uncaring spirit. But Joseph had compassion,
and he asked the question.
Second,
the question was the doorway to Joseph’s future. The question caused him to
learn of the dreams the two men had each experienced. The interpretation of
their dreams gave Joseph a reputation that would eventually send him to a
prominent place in Pharaoh’s court.
Third,
the question led to Joseph’s redemption. This little question was as much a
part of God’s plan for Joseph’s life as were the other “major” events—his being
sold into slavery, his false imprisonment, the dreams interpretations—that
occurred.
God
set up the situation and offered Joseph a chance to respond. In the same way, he
offers his grace in your life so that you may respond to his question for you, “Why
are your faces so sad today?”
Joyfully,
you can ask the “care question”, too. Today if you see someone with a long face,
stop. And with a sincere heart, ask how you can help. Trust God and give
yourself over to this moment. Who knows? It may be a door God is opening to do
great things with your life.
