Abundant Giving
Exodus 36
Ex 36:2-5 Then Moses
summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled person to whom the Lord had
given ability and who was willing to come and do the work. 3 They received from
Moses all the offerings the Israelites had brought to carry out the work of
constructing the sanctuary. And the people continued to bring freewill
offerings morning after morning. 4 So all the skilled craftsmen who were doing
all the work on the sanctuary left their work 5 and said to Moses, “The people
are bringing more than enough for doing the work the Lord commanded to be done.”
WHAT a wonderful testimony this is to God’s
presence among his people. What prompted their generous, overflowing giving to
build God’s sanctuary in the desert?
They
were united together under God’s grace and rule. They understood at this point
in their journey with God that he had come to save them. They saw His miracles
and His just law. They experienced His unprecedented power. And they worshiped
Him as one people under God.
The
Apostle Paul writes of the church being unified under God in Ephesians 2:21-22: In him the whole building
is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him
you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his
Spirit. The building is the church, which is God’s people united to not
merely form a holy place of worship but to be where the Holy Spirit lives. When
God’s people respond to God’s unprecedented power, whether it is building a
desert tabernacle or building a fellowship of Christians studying God’s Word, they
will gladly and freely offer abundant gifts as one people under their God’s
grace.
