Be One
Matthew 5:31-32 “It
has been said, ‘anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of
divorce.’ 32 But I tell you that anyone
who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become
an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.”
I know divorce is a personal, difficult subject. Some of you
reading this have been subjected to verbal and physical abuse, and you felt you
had to get out of the marriage. Some of you have struggled to keep your
marriage, but your spouse sinned and left your marriage. How do we respond to
Jesus’ teaching?
For those of you
who have divorced, victimized by a wayward spouse, know that it is not your
sin. You are free to remarry if you desire because you are not the adulterer. If
you are the one to sin, though, you must repent and be cleansed in your heart
through Jesus’ forgiveness. Remarriage must only occur when you have confessed
your sins and humbled yourself before God and the ones you’ve harmed.
As a word of
warning, if you are considering marrying an adulterer, don’t do it. You will
not change that person. He or she has a tendency to sexual sin. Unless the
person demonstrates a complete repentance through involvement in Christ-centered
counseling, a determined study of God’s Word against adultery, prayer and a
period of abstaining from sex, you must not marry that peson.
For those of you
who are married you must strive with prayer for each other, avoid sexual temptation,
develop clear communication to each other’s needs and kiss passionately at
least 30 seconds a day (Really. It’s a proven way of keeping up the desire).
God formed the marriage as a one-flesh union. Fight for it.
LIFE Link: Be true to God and you will be true to your
spouse.
