Good and Bad
Matthew 22:7-10 The
king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned
their city. 8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but
those I invited did not deserve to come. 9 Go to the street corners and invite
to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets
and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding
hall was filled with guests.”
JESUS continues the parable of the king who invited especially
chosen members of his kingdom to a wedding banquet he had prepared for his son.
Not one of his chosen citizens came. In fact, some of the invited citizens
killed the servants who invited them! In response, the king sends his servants
to invite anyone they find, even the “good and bad”. The banquet hall filled.
What is the
reference to the “good and bad”? Is anyone welcome to God’s eternal banquet
regardless of who they are? In truth, this phrase speaks of God’s eternal plan
that “He so loved the world that He gave
His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have
everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
Our King Jesus has
sent His servants – we His disciples – into the world to welcome not only the
Jews but the entire world to His eternal feast. Many who are invited will not
come. They are the “bad”. Many who are invited will come to the Son’s banquet
to enter into Jesus’ church. These are the “good”. They are the ones who will
fill the banquet hall to feast on the Lord’s Gospel. But there is one
stipulation to stay at the feast, and we will see that tomorrow.
