Read Colossians 4:1
The Master
4 Masters, provide
your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a
Master in heaven.
NONE of us are masters over slaves, are we? Thankfully, our
country long ago put away that hideous enterprise in which people owned and
sold other human beings. So how does verse apply to us today?
Perhaps one way of
looking at this is your attitude toward others. For example, do you speak with “mastery”
over others, using critical words? Do you see others as less capable than you
at work, at home or at church? Might you have thoughts of mastery over others
because you hold to certain political beliefs?
As we are born in
sin separating us from God, we are prone to separate ourselves from other
people. In an attempt to master life, we find ways to feel superior through our
language and behavior. Hideously, we consider others as slaves to our own
cause. “How dare you cut me off? Would you please
hurry up! Can’t you get it right? I’ll come when I’m ready!”
With such words we
create a strident master-slave discord over others. We attempt to enslave others’
thoughts and actions to serve our own. And sometimes, we even try to sell off what
is good and right in our lives to gain more mastery over things and people.
In all ways of
life, we must remember Paul’s reminder that we, indeed, have a Master in
heaven. Masterfully, God has created you and given you life. He has called you
to be his in a deep, abiding love relationship. God alone is Master because God
alone is the source of all life.
Want to master life? Seek the Master’s truth.
A Moment’s Thought: Isn’t it good God is the Master and you
don’t have to be?
