Read 1 Samuel 14
Taking Action
1 One day Jonathan son
of Saul said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come, let's go over to the
Philistine outpost on the other side.” 2 Saul was staying on the outskirts of
Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men.”
THE Bible is filled with stories of people who faithfully said,
“Let’s go.” Noah, Abraham, Moses, Elijah, Elisha, Hosea, Jesus, Peter and Paul
are some of the famous ones. Think of their lives for a minute, and you will
see each, even Jesus, worked against extreme odds when the Father pointed them
where to go.
There was
absolutely no way in Saul’s view that this small group of men could survive a
battle against the Philistines. So he stayed “under the pomegranate tree.” We
don’t know his mindset, but it seems his mind was set on fear that kept him sitting
still.
But then see
Jonathan. “Let’s go.” he says to his armor-bearer. What’s he going to do? I
doubt he knew exactly what he would do, but he did know he needed to take
action against the enemy. He knew they were two men who would come upon a
larger group of uncertain size. He knew the Philistines had the advantage of position
and power. But he said, “Let’s go.”
Jonathan’s another
man who faithfully acts for God. He has seen God’s hand to destroy the enemy,
so he goes trusting to see God in action again. He knows that he and his
armor-bearer can’t win the fight on their own. But he knows they will win if
they fight in the will, purpose and power of God.
A Moment’s Thought: “Come, follow me.” is a “Let’s go.” invitation.
