Read 1 Samuel 25
Stop and Think
32 And David said to
Abigail, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet
me! 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this
day from bloodguilt and from avenging myself with my own hand! 34 For as surely
as the Lord the God of Israel lives, who has restrained me from hurting you,
unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been
left to Nabal so much as one male.”
DAVID was in a murderous rage due to Nabal’s refusal to
receive his men in the traditions of proper hospitality. He and 400 men are on
their way to destroy Nabal and his entire household—everyone connected with
him.
Into the pathway
of David’s anger steps Nabal’s wife, Abigail. She has brought offerings of her
household’s riches to the men. Suddenly David stops to remember the Lord God’s
presence in his life, and David does not sin.
When someone
insults or aggravates us, we too quickly think, “Revenge.” The Bible records many
men who sin because of their high emotions. Their feelings take over their
minds, and they commit crimes of passion. Of course, those crimes continue
today in more ways than murder, including anger, unforgiveness and prideful
competition.
The next time you
feel insulted, stop and think of how your actions often insult God. Remember
that he has not come first to destroy you and your household, but he has come
to offer you the riches of his household. Consider the insulted Jesus, who
said, “Father, forgive them.” (Luke
23:34) And you will “let the peace of
Christ rule in your heart.” (Col 3:15)
A Moment’s Thought: Be still and know who is God.
