Finding Answers
6 But the servant
replied, “Look, in this town there is a man of God; he is highly respected, and
everything he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what
way to take.”
27 As they were going
down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on
ahead of us”-and the servant did so-“but you stay here awhile, so that I may
give you a message from God.”
THE story of Israel’s transition to rule under a King begins
with a donkey story. (Isn’t it interesting how donkeys are involved in God’s
plans? See Ex 4:20, Num 22:23, Matt 21:5
to name a few.) Saul and his servant can’t find the family’s missing donkeys. They
are out of options, so they think it a good thing to inquire of the local man
of God (Samuel) to determine “what way to take” to find the missing donkeys.
I admire the
servant’s idea and his faith. In response to their circumstance, they can
return home empty-handed, or they can seek God. Expectantly the servant
believes God will guide them.
It’s easy to want
to “go home” when we lose our way, isn’t it? We have plans to reach certain
goals. We even have a heart to serve God in some special way. But then
something stops us. Circumstances challenge us and even overwhelm us. Yes, it
is easy to “go home” back to the routine that leaves you empty-handed.
But the men seek
Samuel, and this seemingly simple decision leads Saul to his God-ordained
destiny. When Samuel told Saul, he has a message for him from God, I wonder
what Saul thought. Was he ready to discover what God wanted him to find?
A Moment’s Thought: Finding answers requires seeking.
