Read 1 Samuel 2
God’s Faithful Priest
35 I will raise up for
myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and
mind. I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my
anointed one always.
AN age-old problem is that we have been really bad at
worshiping our Lord. When God established his priests and system of sacrifice
in the Sinai desert (see Exodus and Leviticus), he established exact
procedures for his people to confess their sins and offer animal sacrifices as
a sign of their repentance. But over the generations Israel lost their desire
to worship God. Priests charged with following God’s laws disobeyed and
profaned the worship. Imperfect priests dishonored God’s authority.
Now God acts to raise
up in Samuel a faithful priest to establish God’s authority. Samuel would
minister to Israel’s first king and anoint David, Israel’s second king.
But this prophecy
of a faithful priest extends into the eternal future. Mankind would continue to
disobey and turn from God. Then one day God raised up a most faithful Priest,
Jesus Christ. Jesus offered himself as the perfect sacrifice on the cross.
Faithfully God firmly established his house—his church—to be a place for the
ministry of his Word. Our work is to be faithful priest to establish God’s word
into our children.
A wonderful truth
of scripture is that you see God’s sovereign authority to move history to Jesus.
His plan is evidenced again and again as he preserves his people, even though
they often turn from His ways.
If you ever doubt
God’s love, just read through the Old Testament. Observe how he repeatedly saves
Israel to the day Jesus is born, dies, rises and ascends. His faithful Priest
is, indeed, for you.
A Moment’s Thought: Are you a faithful priest in your home?
