Read 1 Samuel 3
Hear His Voice
10 The Lord came and
stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!"
Then Samuel said,
"Speak, for your servant is listening."
11 And the Lord said
to Samuel: "See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the
ears of everyone who hears of it tingle.
GOD’S constant pattern throughout history is to make himself
and his purposes known through particular people. It is a fascinating journey
through scripture when you see the prophets transformed into mighty voices of
God. Completely obedient to God, they prepare his people for the Lord’s work of
benevolence judgment, and salvation. They speak of God’s desires to care for
his people as he instructs them on healthful and peaceful living. The prophets
speak judgment to correct God’s wayward people. And they speak to bring God’s people
to salvation.
God raised up
Samuel to be a prophet and a priest who cared for his people, spoke judgment on
them and offered to them the way of salvation. He was able to be a true priest
and prophet because he lived to say, “Speak for your servant is listening.”
A servant’s heart
is a trait of all of God’s prophets and godly priests. Think of Joseph, who
served the Lord in obedience to Egypt. Consider Elijah, who served the Lord
against an extremely hostile colure. Think of our Lord Jesus, the servant
Savior.
The words for
servant in the Bible often refer to people who submitted each aspect of their
lives to their master. They were subject to all he said as they lived by the
rule, “Speak for your servant is listening.”
The Holy God still
requires his servants to obey this way today.
A Moment’s Thought: Are you listening?
