Jesus the Word
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
THE WORD “Word” is John’s title for Jesus. Why do you think he refers to Jesus as the Word? Wouldn’t it have been better to say, “In the beginning was the King?”
In truth, Word to the Jewish reader spoke more directly to the power of God than did any other word. See in Psalms 33:6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. And in Genesis, the creation occurs as Genesis 1:14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night.
The Word of God existed before anything. When God “said”, Jesus, the Word, formed the substance of God’s voice. In addition, it was common for Jewish teachers to emphasize that God had created all things through his wisdom, which is his word, and God’s wores, the Law, laid the foundation of his people to worship him and know his true ways. God’s Word sustained them and prospered them as they obeyed.
Thus, John uses “Word” to designate the Christ, the Messiah, to his Jewish readers. To read this at the beginning of his Gospel, John is stating, “What you read in the following pages is about the eternal God, who always was and is and is to come.”
When you speak of the Word of God, it is good to remember you speak of Jesus, who saves you.
It’s True! The Word was made flesh, and now the Word is Spirit within you.
