Change the World
Read Mark 1 - 3
Mark 1:19-20 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
I AM always amazed at this moment. When I see a portrait of Jesus calling these men who are standing at their boats, with nets around them, I think: What a profound crazy moment in their lives. Did they have any idea what they were getting into?
I’m sure they didn’t know what lay ahead of them. They had no idea this man beckoning them was the Son of God. They could not conceive he would die a horrible death. Even worse, they could not possibly see that they would die horrible deaths for this man saying, “Follow me.”
So without any concept of the radical change their lives were to undergo, they did something enormously radical. They dropped what they were doing. They left a good family business. They took an unbelievable economic risk to go with an unemployed, unsupported, wandering rabbi who said, “Follow me.”
The disciples had much to learn. But one thing they had at that moment was a quickening, an enlivening fire from the Holy Spirit. The Son of God beckoned. The Spirit of God enlivened. These young men took the first steps that would change the world.
Pause and Consider: You know a good deal more about Jesus than they did. Are you ready to trust him to take new steps to change the world with him?
