Read 2 Samuel 19-21
In Peace
2 Sam 19:19 “May my
lord not hold me guilty. Do not remember how your servant (Shimei) did wrong on
the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. 5 May the king put it out of his
mind.”
DAVID wins. The rebellion is over, and David is on his way
home. He has the power to condemn his enemies. But here David forgives a man,
Shimei, who had turned against him.
This is a picture
of God’s desire to forgive us his enemies and to be our King in peace and
forgiveness. Yes, born into the sin of Adam, we are God’s enemies. But God sent
his peacemaker, Jesus Christ. In his mercy, our Father in Heaven accepts Jesus’
blood as a peace offering to himself. (Rom
8:1 there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus & Rom
5:10 For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the
death of his Son.)
Hopefully, Shimei
lived in great appreciation of David’s gracious favor to forgive him, and he
remained loyal to David the rest of his days. Certainly it would be a horrible
choice to act against the king who gave him new life in Israel. Confident in
the king’s forgiveness, Shimei’s life would have been content and at peace.
That’s life in the
Kingdom of God. Receive Jesus, the Peacemaker. Welcome him into your life. Trust
the Father’s forgiveness. Be grateful of his favor of life over you forever. Be
content and at peace. After all, it’s his Son’s blood that has saved you.
A Moment’s Thought: Forgiveness is a great peace gift for
yourself and for someone who has been your enemy.
