The Lord’s Music
31 These are the men
David put in charge of the music in the house of the Lord after the ark came to
rest there. 32 They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the Tent of
Meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. They performed
their duties according to the regulations laid down for them.
MUSIC is a form of God’s language that speaks powerfully to
our hearts. It opens the door to emotions of praise, sorrow, gratitude, joy and
thanksgiving. Music also leads us to an attitude to receive the Lord’s Word.
Songs and psalms open the door of our heart to become avenues of peace to our
souls, praise to our hands and love in our hearts. Music is a voice of the Holy
Spirit proclaiming: But I trust in you, O
Lord; I say, “You are my God.” (Psalms 31:14)
Those words and
many, many others come from David. Not only was he gifted to write and play on
the lyre psalms of God, he gave to the Levites, the priests of God, a duty to
be ministers of music around the Tent of Meeting. This was, of course, before
Solomon built the Temple. As the Tent of Meeting rested in Jerusalem, David was
sure to bring honor and praise to God through God’s priests. As the Levites
would teach of God throughout Israel and offer sacrifices in compliance with
the Law, they began to offer ways of verbal praise and worship to God.
Regardless of your
music preference, know that God has used countless people throughout history to
proclaim his songs of creation, judgment and salvation. Hear the music. Hear
God’s voice. Rejoice, give thanks and be glad.
A Moment’s Thought: God’s music is about God.
