Read 2 Samuel 16
It’s Faith
11 David then said to
Abishai and all his officials, “My son, who is of my own flesh, is trying to
take my life. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him
curse, for the Lord has told him to. 12 It may be that the Lord will see my
distress and repay me with good for the cursing I am receiving today.”
DAVID is on the run. Who’s in charge of Israel? Who’s loyal
to David, and who isn’t? Who is David condemning, and who is he protecting? This
is a confusing chapter, and it would be good to have a cast listing of the men
recorded here.
But within the
chaos, there are these words of David. As he speaks of Absalom’s rebellion and
a man’s cursing him, he sees these deadly things as God’s design. Once again,
as he has in every life-threatening circumstance of his life, David brings
order to the chaos with the one thing that never leaves him: faith.
Faithfully David
approached Goliath. Filled with faith he entered Saul’s court to serve the
king. Faithfully David followed his Lord’s leading into the safety and
protection of a foreign country. In faith, David resisted killing Saul two
times. Faith-filled, David formed Jerusalem to prepare for the Messiah.
Faithfully he trusted God’s forgiveness of his sin with Bathsheba.
Yes, David
disobeyed God, and he showed us in too many ways that he failed in his battle
with sin. But his faithful heart responded once more on the day his kingdom was
threatened to trust that God would resolve the crisis, protect him and even
strengthen him. God had given to David this suffering. God would heal the
suffering.
A Moment’s Thought: Faith is strength to believe God is in
control.
