1 Adam, Seth, Enosh, 2
Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, 3 Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah…4 The sons of Noah: Shem,
Ham and Japheth…17 The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram…24
Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah, 25 Eber, Peleg, Reu, 26 Serug, Nahor, Terah 27 and
Abram (that is, Abraham).
HOW did you do? Did you read this chapter? Did you wonder, “Why
do we need to know this?” I’ll answer that.
Note how names go from verses 1-3: Adam, Seth, Enosh, 2 Kenan, Mahalalel,
Jared, 3 Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah. Genesis records God gave to Adam
and Eve their son Seth to replace the righteous Abel, whom Cain murdered.
Follow the lineage in Genesis 4-6, and you’ll see how those 9 generations of
very long-lived men get to Noah. There in Gen 5:32, you’ll see the same words
as verse 4 The sons of Noah: Shem, Ham
and Japheth. Of course, the righteous Noah was God’s savior from the flood.
After the flood,
Ham committed a grievous sin. Noah cursed his future, and Shem received the
blessing (Gen 9:24-27). Now note these
verses: 17 The sons of Shem: Elam,
Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram…24 Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah, 25 Eber, Peleg, Reu,
26 Serug, Nahor, Terah 27 and Abram (that is, Abraham). From Shem, the
blessed son of Noah, came ultimately Abraham.
The reason for the
chronicler to record this line from Adam, is to clearly show that King David’s
lineage was from the righteous men of old and he was indeed a child of Abraham.
God would not
bring his Son from the sin of Cain’s line, but instead Jesus came from the
lineage of the righteous Seth. This demonstrates God’s perfect plan of
salvation from the very first family.
A Moment’s Thought: You can surely trust God’s plan for your
life.
