Read 1 Chronicles 3
Surprise Blessing
4 David reigned in
Jerusalem thirty-three years, 5 and these were the children born to him there: Shammua,
Shobab, Nathan and Solomon. These four were by Bathsheba daughter of Ammiel.
ONE of the Bible’s most infamous sins is David’s adultery
with Bathsheba. Now we see that 4 living sons were born to David and Bathsheba.
In addition, we know that Solomon succeeded David’s throne. It seems contrary
to God’s ways that a couple who sinned so infamously would be blessed so
famously.
We put a great
power over sin, don’t we? We think of what we’ve done or haven’t done against
God and we say to ourselves, “I know God forgives sins, but surely not that one thing I did.” We cling to the harm
in our lives and it harms the possibilities of a greater relationship with
Jesus. We look at the dirt as if Jesus’ cleansing blood can’t wash it off.
Even worse, we
look to others’ sins as limiting their relationship with Jesus. When we know of
someone’s sin and even know he has repented, we put a spiritual box around the person.
Instead of ministering to them, we accuse and judge them, depriving them of
Jesus’ great love.
Yes, it seems odd
that God would bless the sinful couple David and Bathsheba until you remember God’s
words “If you repent, I will restore you that
you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my
spokesman.” (Jeremiah 15:19) and his actions.
Jesus strengthens
that promise in Matthew 26:28 This is my
blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of
sins. If you’re thinking anyone’s sins are too big or bad to be forgiven,
consider the Father’s promise. Consider the son’s sacrifice.
A Moment’s Thought: Jesus’ blood washes away your sin.
