God Directed
Exodus 17
Ex 17:1 The whole
Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to
place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water
for the people to drink.
THE fact that the Hebrews traveled from “place to place as the Lord commanded” and
then they came to Rephidim, where “there
was no water for the people to drink.” might cause you to ask, “Wouldn’t he know
there was no water for his nation at Rephidim? Is God a poor leader or what?”
“Or
what” indeed. What happened? Out of a rock at Rephidim came streams of water.
Read further, and you will see the Hebrews defeat the Amalekites as they faithfully
obey their God.
Amid
these miracles is Moses’ Spirit-powered staff. He strikes the rock. He lifts it
high to strengthen his troops. Moses’ staff was the instrument God used to curse
the Nile River red and bring frongs, flies and gnats to torture the Egyptians.
Human
nature demands evidence from our Creator that he is God. He repeatedly took his
people into places of suffering—slavery, thirst and war—to be fully reliant on
the power of the Living God to rescue them from their troubles and to know His
power was the difference between life and death.
Moses’
God-empowered staff was a picture of God power to free you from sin’s slavery
and ultimate death. The Father put into the hands of His Son, Jesus, not a
wooden staff but a wooden cross to raise high and declare, “Drink my Living
Water. Be free from the war in your soul, from Satan’s tyranny. Follow me to
freedom, joy and peace. I will lead you home!”
LIFE Link: God leads you sometimes to pain so
that you will rejoice in his power.
