These Are the Laws
Exodus 21
Ex 21:1 “These are
the laws you are to set before them.”
WE often are inclined to think of the Ten
Commandments as the only law gave to his people. But those ten were essentially
the most fundamental rules regarding mankind’s activities in their relationship
to God and in their relationship to each other. The list of God’s laws in
Exodus 21 is the beginning of some precise laws gave to his people, so they
could live safely and fully with one another.
Yes,
it is very important to understand the word “relationship” in the purpose of
the laws. Laws help us to treat each other well and to be fair with one
another. Our civil laws today are designed to guide us in ways to respect one
another as we do not steal or covet others’ property, do not lie and certainly
do not murder. God’s laws are designed to guide us into a true relationship
with him. We cannot be in a true relationship with God if we put him anywhere
but first in our lives, and if we neglect the laws regarding how to treat our
neighbors.
So
as we think of God’s laws and our civil laws, let us remember the words, “These are the laws you are to set before
them.” These are God’s words to Moses to demonstrate his great desire for
his people to be in a true loving relationship with him and with one another.
The word “law” can sound harsh, but let’s be thankful for law. Let’s be
thankful God tells us how to live a right way with him that we will enjoy all
he has prepared for us on this earth. And even more, when we worship him above
all, we will enjoy the eternal life he has prepared for us.
LIFE Link: God’s law is God’s sign of his
true love for you.
