The End Purpose
Matthew 16:25-27 “For
whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me
will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world,
yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For
the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then
he will reward each person according to what he has done.”
HOW would you answer the question, “What is your ultimate
purpose in life?” Many of us would say, “To be happy. To be comfortable. To
have a good family. To enjoy my job. To be wealthy. To be content.”
Sadly, I’ve never
heard anyone answer, “To be ready to meet Jesus.” What causes us to make the
temporary life our main life? In other words, why is it we measure our efforts
and successes on what we can accomplish between our date of birth and our date
of death? After all, isn’t eternity the main life—the “always life”? Of course
it is. True Christians would say so. Jesus certainly said so. As he urgently
asks his disciples, “What good will it be
for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?” our Lord is
turning their eyes to the future. He has talked to them of his own upcoming sacrifice,
and he has promised them that supreme sacrificial living must be part of
following him.
There is no great
wealth than possessing the Kingdom of God in our heart. There is no greater
work than to work steadfastly for the Lord. We must live with eternity in view
for it surely is coming.
LIFE Link: Eternal eyes.
