Changed to Glory
Matthew 17:1-3 After six days Jesus took with him Peter,
James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by
themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the
sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared
before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
THIS is “The Transfiguration”. Matthew describes Jesus
changing from human form into his heavenly form, displaying extraordinary,
intense light “like the sun”. For a few minutes Jesus shows Peter, James and
John what they will see when they meet Jesus in heaven.
The word
“transfigured” means that Jesus has changed without giving up what is in him.
In other words, as Jesus came to earth, he put aside the brilliant light of his
glory. He became fully human to live and work among us. But Jesus kept his
glory within him. For a brief time that day, he let the three disciples to see
his glory as he put his humanity aside.
Jesus
not only showed his own glory, but we also see our ultimate destination. As we
confess our sins before Christ and worship him as our Lord and Savior, we
receive the Holy Spirit. We take on a holy nature, redeemed from our sin nature
as the Spirit lives within us.
Faithfully
following Jesus, we will become fully transformed to heaven’s glory. Paul says
it this way: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and
approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans
12:2)
Jesus is
now completely in glory. As his own, you will be one day, too.
