Gospel Signs
Matthew 16:1-4 The
Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them
a sign from heaven. 2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be
fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be
stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the
appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 A
wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be
given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.
THE Lord God has always been willing to show himself clearly
to His people. God gave to a sign to Noah:
“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant
between me and the earth.” (Genesis 9:13) To Abraham: “Circumcision will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.”
(Genesis 17:11) To Moses: “I will be with
you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you
have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
(Ex 3:12)
But something was
wrong here. Jesus had been giving sign after sign to the Jews, but they still
wanted more evidence of Jesus’ divine power. Thus, Jesus denied his power to
the unbelievers. The point of his ministry wasn’t to do sign after sign. He
ministered to point the world to the cross, the grave, and to heaven. Thus, he
promised only the sign of Jonah, meaning he would be 3 days in the tomb as
Jonah was 3 days in the great fish.
Look to the empty
cross and see Jesus’ sign of eternal life.
