Blessed Assurance
Matthew 10:26-30 “So
do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be
disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 27 What I tell you in the
dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the
roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.
Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are
not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground
apart from the will of your Father. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are
all numbered.”
ONE confusing part of this scripture may be Jesus words, “What I tell you in the dark, speak in the
daylight.” Many times in the Bible “dark” refers to sin and things that are
hidden from God. However, in this case, Jesus is using “dark” to refer to what
the says to his disciples in private.
Although Jesus
spoke boldly in public and challenged many religious authorities, he knew his
words were a threat to his own life. Certainly he had no fear of death, and
Jesus knew his ultimate destiny in his earthly life. But he needed to protect
his disciples, so they would be equipped and alive to carry on the Gospel.
Jesus warned them.
Jesus assured them. As we have been seeing these past few days, chapter 10 of
Matthew is a very hard series of teachings that reminds us of the cost of discipleship.
It also is a very assuring series of teachings that reminds us that our
obedience to the cost brings eternal reward.
