Little Love
Matthew 10:39-42
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake
will find it. 40 “He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me
receives the one who sent me. 41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a
prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous
man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. 42 And
if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he
is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”
WHEN we hear the word “disciples” we readily pull out of our
mind a picture of the twelve men scripture lists as Jesus’ disciples. Scripture
also points to others who followed Jesus, agreed with him and obeyed his
teachings as disciples. I pray you are Jesus’ disciple today.
What is a
disciple? Following Jesus requires a full focus on hearing his teachings and doing
them. A disciple must live in the discipline of a new life in Christ. Certainly
discipleship requires sacrificial living. And very often discipleship is seen
in the simple, little things we do.
For example, in
verse 42 Jesus tells us that offering a cup of cold water (I wonder how easily
available a cup of cold water was then?) to a child is discipleship. Yes we
remember many “little” kind acts that people do for us. We love the encouraging
note. The fresh-baked cookies, the smile of greeting, the listening ear, the
affirming word and so many more little things can turn our hearts to hope and joy.
Jesus certainly
did big things. Jesus assuredly did little things. They all fit discipleship.
