Power Speak
Matthew 10:17-20 “Be
on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and
flog you in their synagogues. 18 On my account you will be brought before
governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they
arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you
will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit
of your Father speaking through you.”
NOTICE the last phrase, “Spirit of your Father speaking
through you.” As Jesus commands his disciples (that’s all past, present and
future people who call Jesus, “Lord.”) he shows a very clear relationship
between himself, the Father in heaven, and the Holy Spirit.
Under Jesus’
teaching we are to teach of him to the world. The phrase “on my account” means that
Jesus will ultimately use the disciples’ teachings to bring glory to his name
and reveal the Gospel to many through the persecutions.
Also, we must not
shy away from speaking the Gospel, fearing we’ll say something wrong. Jesus
calls us to speak in confidence because we can trust the Holy Spirit, “the
Spirit of your Father”, who will give us the right words to say.
In his words,
Jesus displays the partnership of the Trinity to proclaim the Gospel. The Gospel
declares the Father sent the Son to die on the cross, then to rise from the
grave in the power of the Holy Spirit. From there the Spirit formed the church
and empowers us to preach the Gospel.
Do you think it’s
possible to live with such a faith in God that we always boldly and lovingly
speak of Him?
LIFE Link: It is possible if we speak in the Spirit’s power.
