True Lord
Matthew 12:23-28 All
the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” 24 But
when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub, the prince
of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.” 25 Jesus knew their thoughts
and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and
every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan
drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?
27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them
out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if I drive out demons by the
Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”
THE people of God were beginning to understand. But the
leaders who claimed to keep God’s truths were persistent to deny the true Lord.
Jesus’
demonstrations of his Lordship over heaven and earth was opening the eyes of
Israel. Through his words, healings and demon exorcisms, Jesus showed to Israel
that a King more powerful than David had come. How could one miss the radical, remarkable
displays of the heavenly power come to earth?
The Pharisees show
us an example of how people miss Jesus. These learned men denied the evidence
of his grandeur with references to the great evil Satan. The Pharisees
categorically rejected Jesus’ authority as Lord of heaven and earth. Instead,
they claimed he was lord of the demons. They seemed to have no thought that the
one who commanded the demons was the true Lord of heaven and earth, the One who
could command all things at his will.
What’s your view
of Jesus? Do you limit him, or do you believe in him as Lord?
