Get Up
Matthew 8:14-15 When
Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a
fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began
to wait on him.
TO us, this might not be a big deal. So Peter’s mother has a
fever, and she got up when Jesus touched her. Ha! She must have been loafing. It’s
time for some lunch.
But Peter’s mom
was a very sick woman. “Fever” means fire. This means her temperature was so
high she couldn’t function, and fevers sometimes lead to death in that time.
This “quick miracle” at the touch of Jesus’ healing hand is as great a miracle as
telling the water to become wine (John 2) or saying to the lame man, “Take up your mat and walk.” (John 5). The
great purpose of Jesus’ physical healings was to point people constantly to his
power to heal our souls. Physical healings demonstrated the power of God to
save both body and soul.
But sadly our
tendency is to minimize God’s words to the mundane and the ordinary. Perhaps we
read of such miracles in a “black and white” view, seldom stopping to consider
what wonder Jesus had performed. Seldom do we look at our own life saved in
Christ as a miracle of healing.
We take so much
for granted because we have been taught, “You deserve a break today.” We hear, “Thank
goodness it’s Friday.” as if our work means nothing. We are asked, “What do you
want?” and throw a fit if it doesn’t come on time in our framework.
We are so presumptuous,
presuming even we deserve Jesus’ salvation.
LIFE Link: Gratefully get up and serve the one who has
healed your soul.
