What Kind of Man?
Matthew 8:24-27 Without
warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the
boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord,
save us! We're going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are
you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was
completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this?
Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
HOW would you answer the fearful disciples’ question, “What kind
of a man is this?” Maybe you would say that Jesus is also God and in the power
of God he calmed the sea “though its
waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” (Psalms
46:3) You could certainly answer the disciples’ question with, “He’s the
Savior, and he saved you from certain drowning.” Might you also answer the
question with, “He was a man of faith.”
Jesus’ words, “You of little faith, why are you so
afraid?” always causes me to wonder about my role on that boat. Would I
have cowered in fear, or would I have faithfully prayed to God, “Lord, stop the
storms.”
Do you believe your
prayers can stop the storm? Here’s one testimony: A group of men we know were on
mission to Central America. They heard the forecast of a hurricane coming
directly at them, arriving in the middle of the night. They had no protection.
In response, they prayed.
During the night,
to the mystery of experts, the hurricane turned and diminished. Faithful men
prayed, and the Lord responded.
Most Christians
would say, “Wow, what good luck!” I would say, “Wow, what kind of men were
they?”
LIFE Link: The name of the group was “Faith in Action”.
