He Took Them
Matthew 8:17 This was
to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our
infirmities and carried our diseases.”
WHEN someone takes a thing, he does so to use it for his own
purposes. I took the money my wife gave to me and bought a shirt. My friend
took the book I gave him to read about the star formations. The thief took all
the valuables from the house.
But isn’t it
wonderful that Jesus took nothing for his own benefit? He took up, instead, our
infirmities. He took our sins upon his shoulders and carried the cross to
Golgotha. The infirmity of sin is taken from our soul as Jesus lovingly
stretched his hands for the nails. The wrath of God is no longer upon us because
Jesus took God’s judgment onto himself.
Even more, Jesus
takes the infirmities of our mourning and turns it into comfort. He takes our
feelings of depression and frustration and forms them into, “I love you.” Our
Savior picks up the infirmities of our anxieties and fears to still our hearts to
rest in him.
Jesus takes hold
of your hand to lead you to the garden of resurrection. There he speaks softly
to you and calls you by name. A you plea for your dying mother or your failing
father, he reminds you he has come to take them home so they can be where he
is.
In joy, Jesus
takes a child’s heart to form it in love for him. He takes His Word and places
it upon a teen’s heart. And he takes the hands of a man and a woman to form the
two into one.
The world is
filled with sin’s infirmities. Jesus, though, has taken them, so they are no
longer yours.
LIFE Link: Look! They’re gone.
