Compassion
Matthew 14:14 When
Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their
sick.
JESUS had gone to a remote place to mourn the death of John
the Baptist. But now the remote place is filling with people. There is no time,
it seems, for Jesus to grieve John’s death. He takes his mind from his own
grief, and he looks upon his people with compassion.
Sometimes we may
say, “I feel your pain.” to a friend who is experiencing despair or grief. We have
experienced something similar. We know what they are feeling and how they are
hurting. That’s compassion. It means you feel the pain of others because their pain
is deep in your heart, too.
Jesus’ heart knew
his people’s pain. Many sick people had taken a difficult path to follow Jesus
to that solitary place. They were God’s people in need of God’s healing. God’s
own had heard of this man displaying the glory and the power of God through the
miracles of physical and demonic healings. They believed that life-changing,
soul-restoring healing would be for them, too, if they went to him. They
persevered through rough country to get to the Christ.
What else would
the God do? After all, he says, “The
Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in
love and faithfulness.” (Ex 34:6) Jesus turned those words to life.
Jesus’ compassion
brought him from heaven. His compassion moved him to heal. Jesus’ compassion that
day rested in the healed bodies of his people.
How do you need
healing today? Pursue Jesus, even if it’s over the rocky ground of doubt, fear
and despair. Go to him. Let him know you need healing. Trust him and let his
compassion rest in you.
LIFE Link: Jesus passionately came for you.
