Only Trust Jesus
Matthew 14:15-17 As
evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote
place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to
the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need
to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 “We have here only five loaves
of bread and two fish,” they answered.
TWO things are very true about walking in faith with Jesus. First,
we take one step at a time. Second, we must trust only Jesus. Whether we’re
speaking of God’s call on Abram or Jesus’ call on his disciples, or of our own
faith walk, we know each person’s walk is one trusting step at a time.
The disciples had experienced
Jesus step-by-step in many ways. They had stepped from their lives to eagerly
say, “Yes!” to his call. They studied his habits, questioned his theology,
exclaimed joy over his healings and still struggled to trust him more.
Struggles can
easily stop our faith walk, can’t they? We get so far with Jesus, but do we
really trust him to go the next step? “That’s too much, Jesus!”
And so it was in
that remote place that day. Posed with a food problem, they didn’t even
consider trusting Jesus for the solution. They spoke, instead, words of
limitation, “We have here only”.
Then Jesus showed
the disciples that they only needed him. Out of this remote place, they would they
would walk one day to say to the world with a deep trust, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his
glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace
and truth.” (John 1:14)
