Treasured Possession
Matthew 13:44 “The
kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he
hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that
field.”
FROM the motivational speaker Earl Nightingale comes a true
story of an African farmer who heard tales about other farmers who had made
millions by discovering diamond mines. These tales so excited him that he sold
the farm and spent the rest of his life wandering the African continent
searching unsuccessfully for the gleaming treasures of wealth. One day,
despondent, he threw himself into a river and drowned.
Meanwhile, the man
who had bought his farm found a bright flash of blue and red light in the farm’s
stream. He bent down and picked up a good-sized stone, and admiring it, he
brought it home and put it on his fireplace mantel as an interesting curiosity.
Several weeks
later a visitor picked up the stone, looked closely at it, felt it in his hand,
and nearly fainted. The farmer had no idea of his treasure as the visitor told
him he had found one of the largest diamonds ever discovered.
The farm became
one of the most productive diamond mines on the entire African continent. The
first farmer had owned free and clear acres of treasure. But he had sold them
for practically nothing, in order to look for treasure elsewhere.
Our lives are that
way, aren’t they? We seek happiness as we wander about enticed by big promises that
lead to unhappy endings. Too often, we put Jesus on the shelf unable to
recognize he is the greatest treasure ever. We sell him off for pleasurable
moments that can rob us of eternity. Stay close to Jesus. Know his great worth.
Be in joy.
