God Comes
Matthew 14:23(b)-25 When
evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat was already a considerable
distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25
During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the
lake.
THE fourth watch of the night is 3-6 am. It seems Jesus had
been praying all night. Then he walks to rejoin his disciples who are a “considerable
distance” from land. This reminds me of life and God’s love for us.
As the disciples
did, we may hear God’s teaching from a sermon or perhaps a reading such as
this. Then we get up and go, but we leave the Lord behind. We have considered
his words, but we have not taken them with us. Life’s winds buffet us as we attempt
to navigate through the day and the week. At some point during the week, we
find ourselves a “considerable distance” from Jesus.
We lose track in
the darkness of our souls, unsure where to guide our thoughts. Somehow the
intrusions are too strong, and we can’t get back to Jesus.
Mercifully our God
acts to come to us. Hear Paul’s words from Romans
8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what
we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that
words cannot express.
As Jesus prayed
long and fervently that night, he certainly prayed for his disciples. In a like
manner, the Spirit prays for Jesus’ disciples now. The Spirit passionately goes
to the throne of God to strengthen you amid the winds and darkness that too
often hold you from Jesus.
Yes, our Lord
still comes. Receive his word. Know your way home.
