Lean on Truth
Matthew 12:38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said
to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.”
WE have a tendency to find
ways to reject the truth, don’t we? Someone may point to you a way you could
parent better. Or a friend may offer a suggestion on stopping a harmful habit.
Possibly someone will offer a way for you to work more efficiently. Certainly
God’s Word tells us what we are doing wrong, and how we can change as we
faithfully respond to God.
No, we do not like such advice. It points to our faults. Our
nature is to stay doing the same things, even as they harm our bodies, our
relationships and our faith in God. We reject advice, even God’s true words,
with the prideful attitude, “Who are you to tell me what to do?”
The religious authorities whom Jesus confronted were certainly that
way. Change would mean letting go of their sacred traditions, their habits and
their view of God that pridefully pointed back to their self-righteousness.
Change would require them to “trust in the Lord with all (their) heart and lean
not on (their) own understanding” (Prov 3:5) The Pharisees continually negated
Jesus’ authority. They asked, “Teacher we want to see a miraculous sign from
you.” As if to say, “Do this, and we’ll believe you.”
Their purpose, though, was to find a reason to reject his truth.
Jesus’ purpose wasn’t to come and do miracles. Jesus’ purpose was to turn the
hearts and minds of his people to truly lean not on their own understanding of
God, but to anchor their lives in God’s Word.
What must change in your life? Are you humble to lean on God’s true
words?
